Chapter 1

Fast forward 3 years. The hero wakes up in a flophouse with a terrible hangover. After awakening, his is thrown out by the proprietor for not paying his bill. Normally he would object but he is too drunk to really deal with it. Finding himself destitute, he wanders the town, looking for work. He is rejected by someone doing construction and by a blacksmith. Some thugs try to beat him for sport, all the while shouting catcalls at him, but he fights them off with his fists. After this encounter, the hero decides to visit the local bar for more ale. There he hears a minstrel play a popular tune, one about the Siege of Dragonspur. It tells of how the people managed to defeat the Lord of Envy despite lacking the support of their leaders. The hero's name figures prominently in the dirge, which is cheerfully sung by the crowd. The hero can't take it and calls for a beer to drown his shame, and reminisces of the aftermath of the Dragonspur defeat, and how he was held responsible for the city being lost. Everyone saw him flee, seemingly out of cowardice. His name and his family's name is despised throughout the land. His estate was forfeit to help pay for the war after the General was defeated (and because he never came back to claim his own estate because of the key). The key has become a curse to him. He has hit rock bottom. He has a dark moment where he contemplates giving up, but then he overhears two men talking about a mercenary captain hiring arms to escort a caravan. It is a low paying job with much danger, but it's all he has available. He decides to get his life back together, and he heads to the southern edge of town to speak with the mercenary captain to accept the work.

Game Notes for Chapter 1:

At the start of Chapter 1, there is a cinematic show of the hero waking up drunk and remembering the night before. After the player brings him downstairs, the innkeeper approaches him and demands money, and the hero has none. He is driven out of the inn, and decides to look for work. At that point control of the game is turned over to the player. He explores the town until he encounters the carpenter and the blacksmith. Brief, basic combat is undertaken with a group of thugs, and after fighting them off with his fists, he enters the pub. At each of these locations there is some dialogue. In the pub, he overhears a minstrel singing a popular about the siege of Dragonspur. It tells of how the people managed to defeat the Lord of Envy despite lacking the support of their leaders, and the hero is mentioned prominently in the dirge. This depresses him further, and he sulks at the bar until he overhears two men beside him talking of mercenary work. Then he is thrown out after not having any money to pay for his drink. The player guides him around town, and has another encounter with the angered thugs. The player controls the hero as he heads over to the mercenary captain. He is hired on by this man, given light equipment suitable to the player's chosen class, and set to guard a caravan.
