The Hero (the Player-Controlled Main Character)

Name: Player Chosen (Default male name is Rohan and default female name is Braya)
Sex: Player Chosen (male or female)
Age: mid-thirties
Background: The hero was once an officer in the Lords of the West, the mercenary company that liberated three kingdoms. However, the hero was saddled with the responsibility for a mysterious key, and his responsibility for the key forced him to abandon his post in the defense of Dragonspur City at a crucial time. His guilt over this act caused him to sink into alcoholism. Only lately has he begun to pull himself out of the pits of depression and to assume a heroic role once more.
Role: The hero is the main character of the game. Player controlled, the action and plot center around the hero.
Alignment: Good
Appearance: Customizable (The player can chose a face, body type, and hair color. Generally, the hero is a human in his or her mid-thirties)
Personality: Generally responsible and even an inspired leader, the hero is also prone to guilt and remorse. He is very hard on himself and suffers from the disease of alcoholism.
Phrases: 1. “Get back, dirty beasts!” 2. “For the memory of the Lords of the West!” 3. “Stand down or I will smite you!” 4. “I have failed again.”

The Priest (Serpent of Twilight)

Name: Warner Ack-Fulk {as the Priest)
Sex: male
Age: looks to be in his early forties but is thousands and thousands of years old
Background: The Serpent of Twilight was created by the Snake-Goddess Salystra. Since she could not descend to Nurion, she created a being from the energies of the Maelstrom and infused it with life. She sent it to Nurion to corrupt the elven race and trick them into summoning her to the world. Her plan worked, creating drow, but the other elves realized their danger soon enough and took the Keys of Naand, hiding them throughout the world to thwart the Serpent. Ever since then, the Serpent of Twilight has sought the keys so that he may bring his mistress to Nurion.
Role: The Priest is both an aid to the hero and the hero's greatest enemy, though he does not know it. The Priest/Serpent drives the action in that he manipulates the hero into hunting for the Keys, then he drives the hero to make his deal with evil.
Alignment: neutral evil
Appearance: As the Priest, he looks like a middle-aged human with white skin and salt-and-pepper hair. He is clad in heavy armor and bears a mace with a Serpent-shaped head. In his true form as the Serpent of Twilight, he is a gigantic, terrible figure. Rather demonic looking, he has the lower body of a serpent, the upper-body of a humanoid, and a face that is a mix of a demonic humanoid and a snake. Gigantic, viper-like fangs just from his mouth, dripping with venom. He is scaley and slimy. He looks something like a centaur, except made from a snake rather than a horse.
Personality: The Priest/Serpent is patient, conniving and cunning, though he is at times quick to lose his temper. Because he does not care at all for innocent life, he will use his powerful magic to destroy his enemies with no regard for innocent life or property. This nearly gives him away at several points. As a creature created by Salystra from the energy of the Maelstrom, his one over-riding aim is to serve his mistress and see her descend to Nurion.
Phrases: 1. “Feel the power of the god!” 2. “Yes, my queen.” 3. “You cannot defeat me!” 4. “By Salystra!”

The Captain, former follower of the Hero

Name: Adam Ack-Peter
Sex: male
Age: 30
Background: A scion and a descendant of the great hero Zestor Half-Elven, Adam has served as his fathers and his father's fathers have served for generations: In the defense of Dragonspur City. Even as a boy he knew of his fate as a second son to his father Peter. And, from the earliest of ages he trained in the arts of the sword, horsemanship, archery, and other lessons that were all geared towards thrusting him into the role of a leader of men when he came of age. As a survivor of the disastrous siege of Dragonspur, he became a much colder individual after what he deemed the betrayal of the hero, for he felt that he could trust no one but himself when it came to important matters that stir his soul, which is the defense of his people and his land.
Role: The Captain acts as a support character predominantly in Acts 2 and 3 and serves to remind the hero of his past at first, and to later help the hero return to his former prowess before falling off the wagon.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral.
Appearance: Adorned in chainmail armor with a steel shield, Adam wields a longsword and carries a crossbow. With blonde hair and beard, he is of average height and with a solid build. The crest of his family is displayed prominently on a talbard, and his only vanity appears to be a signet ring with his family's house crest upon it.
Personality: Although Adam takes himself and his job quite seriously, he learned long ago to break tension by offering up jokes, even at times when danger is at its highest. But, as jokes go, they never per se derail his leadership, but only enforce it.
Phrases: 1. “Ah, well, cheated death another day… 2. Oh, come on, smile, you bastard! 3. I'm going to see your chicken neck swing from a rope, you traitor! 4. Heh. Of all the ways to die…by a woman's hand…how…bloody…typical…

The Dweller in the Wintervale

Name: Talkana “Moondaughter” Silumiel, although this name is secret
Sex: female
Age: thousands and thousands of years
Background: The Dweller in the Vale was born Talkana Silumiel in Alustel, when the world was young. She was the most beautiful elf ever to live, but her curiosity and drive for power led her to be seduced by Vornoth, the God of Darkness. She was made into the first orc, and she spawned the race of orcs. She took up residence in the east, creating an unnaturally icy land, called the Wintervale, in which to dwell. Ever since her creation, she has sought to conquer the world and instill mandatory worship of Vornoth in every kingdom. She orchestrated countless battles throughout history until she finally succeeded by using the Book of Seven to create the Lords of Sin. Only lately has her conquest of Farland begun to slip, and she desires to reconquer the kingdoms the Lords of the West freed.
Role: The Dweller acts as a mysterious being who observes the hero and occasionally sends challenges to pester him. Eventually she is instrumental in allowing the hero to overcome the Serpent of Twilight, and she serves as the hero's last challenge in the game.
Alignment: evil
Appearance: The Dweller is a mysterious being in a very pale blue robe. Her robe is trimmed with evil runes. Plumes of frost billow out from under the robe, obscuring her face and hands.
Personality: The Dweller is power-hungry, tortured, and thoroughly evil. She forever misses what she lost when she gave up her heritage, but she would not chose differently, so tainted is she by evil.
Phrases: 1. “You do not know the power… you cannot know.” 2. “Bow before the might of the Dark One.” 3. “Foolish mortal! Do you know whom you face?” 4. “All shall be mine! All! The world!”

The General (Servant of the Lord of Envy)

Name: Angus Neebrok
Sex: male
Age: 50
Background: The General was a minor Lordling in Envy's lands. A human, he betrayed and sold out his own people any chance he had. He served as the eyes and ears of the Dark Folk in the province he ruled. He began to grow too rich and powerful, however, and the powers in Orland City insisted that he join the army as an officer of lower status. He proved to be an able officer, though, proving himself very useful in the endless battles against Sloth's forces. He quickly rose through the ranks to become one of Envy's most valued generals; indeed, he came to be called “The General.” When the Lords of the West freed Kelerak and the Lord of Anger commanded Envy to retake it, he charged Neebrok with the task.
Role: The General serves as an antagonist to the hero in the early parts of the game.
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Appearance: The General is an older, gray-haired, gray-bearded man with a craggy face. He has a medium build and wears a kilt over his hardened leather cuirass. He speaks with a Scottish accent.
Personality: The General is a shrewd schemer and tactician. He never loses his temper and is always cold and calculating. He would betray his own mother in a heartbeat.
Phrases: “At 'em, me lads!” “Send in the bully boys!” “I dinnae think you know who yer dealin' with.” “I'm just going for a wee donner doon the road, and when I return, this redoubt had better have fallen.”

Cleric of Dekk

Name: Baldwin Ack-Thomas
Sex: male
Age: 49
Background: Baldwin grew up in occupied Dragonspur. His father was a secret priest of Dekk, and he trained his son to be the same. Baldwin's young life was spent in shadows, always afraid that the forces of the Lord of Lust would find their secret churchand execute them both. And this fear became partially true when one dark night, Lust's orcs broke into the secret basement that served as the temple and slew Baldwin's father. The young boy escaped, and from that day on he vowed to give his life in the service of Dekk.
Role: The Cleric serves to get the hero involved in the quest.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Appearance: Thin because of his abstemious diet, Baldwin has short-cropped hair, a wrinkled face, and eyes bright and feverish with his dedication to his god. Having grown used to dressing as a peasant, Baldwin still does not wear cleric's vestments, but he does display a prominent holy symbol of Dekk.
Personality: Baldwin is very wise and well educated, but his obsession with serving his god makes him a very intense person.
Phrases: “Dekk's will be done.” “Knowledge is the greatest weapon and the strongest shield.”

Drow Assassin

Name: Bal’zala
Sex: female
Age: 180
Background: Bal'Zala is that rarest of drow: a good, principled dark elf. She was raised in a Ward the same as all other drow, but she did not advance far, though she displayed excellent physical, intellectual, and magic skills. She simply lacked the desire or the will to double cross her ward-mates. Thus her future in her society seemed bleak. But one of her ward teachers was secretly a member of a Clandestine Society that had existed for thousands of years. The purpose of the society was to make up for the evils the drow had wrought by creating the Keys of Naand. This teacher recognized Bal'zala's pure spirit and trained her in the ways of his order. Bal'zala embraced these moral and practical lessons with all her heart, and upon her graduation, she left drow society to attempt to do what she could to thwart the Serpent of Twilight.
Role: The Assassin is at first an enigmatic character who seems to be the enemy of the hero, but she eventually proves to be a true ally.
Alignment: neutral good
Appearance: The Drow Assassin is a beautiful, lithe, dark-skinned elf woman. She has white hair and amber eyes. Valuing secrecy, she is dressed entirely in black.
Personality: Bal'zala has a pure spirit, although she believes that consequences are what matter most, and she believes in the “greatest good for the greatest number of creatures.” Thus she is willing to do what it takes to stop the Serpent. She is severe, stoic, and very serious in her demeanor.

Having trained under Gloringwe for some time, the noble bard has sent his charge out into the world, knowing that she must become more worldly to be a true Master of the Lute.
